Every year, the Kelly Kadets invite the Glencoe Twirlers and the Stites Twirlers to march in the Junior Rose parade. It's REALLY fun and exciting! Marching down Sandy boulevard with thousands of people cheering for us is a unique experience. For most twirlers, this event marks the culmination of a year of practice. The Kelly Kadets Baton Corps has won first place in the Junior Rose Parade for decades!
Everyone is welcome. Most K, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders do pom-poms. Some Glencoe and Stites 3rd and 4th graders may twirl a flag or a baton if they have done poms at least once or twice before. In order to twirl baton or flag, they must plan to attend extra practices with the Kellys during the month of May at Stites and at Glencoe.
SHOES: Twirlers wear pure white tennis shoes. We recommend that each twirler have his/her own pair and wear them a few times before the parade to avoid blisters. No socks, but you can wear “footies” that don’t show. We have a few used white shoes, but they may not fit perfectly. Start looking now—Target, Payless, Walmart, Kmart, places like that. If you find shoes with a little bit of colored decoration, buy some white adhesive tape or white duct tape to cover it up.
CARPOOLS and EXCUSING FROM SCHOOL: You drop your child at about 11:00 at Normandale Park, and you pick him/her up when we are finished, at Grant High School at 2:00. It’s good to share drop off/pick up with another family. Your child will need to be excused from school that day or for ½ day. More details are handed out as soon as we get our time assignment from the Rose Festival Association.
GETTING IN SHAPE:
The marching time from the actual beginning to the very end is about 45 minutes, and the wait time as we are directed around by the Rose Festival managers is about 1.5 hours. Your child will have a better experience if you start getting in shape early by walking briskly for 30 minutes many times a week. Let your child walk while shaking pom-poms or twirling a baton to make the walk fun, but keep moving briskly. Kindergarteners always surprise their parents by being able to do the whole parade, and it’s mostly downhill.
Prepare for this experience: Eat a healthy dinner on Tuesday. Get a good night's sleep. Please have a very light lunch before dropping off at the parade. It's important not to get dehydrated, so be sure to drink a lot of water the day before the parade and again the morning of the parade, but remember that bathrooms are hard to find. Twirlers (this includes pom-pommers and flaggers) should walk 30 minutes a day at a fast pace, every day, to prepare themselves for the parade. Parents, please help with this so your child will not be unhappy in the parade.
QUESTIONS? Call Shanon 503-665-5155 or Debbie 503-522-6367 (do not call Glencoe).
Extra Practices: Baton twirlers and Flaggers must attend extra mandatory practices. Pom-Pommers do not have extra practices.

Costume Rules: Costumes are for general effect and they might not fit perfectly. Pin appropriately to make them fit. DO NOT PLAY IN THE COSTUME AT HOME, HAVE FOOD NEAR THE COSTUME, OR WEAR THE COSTUME ANYWHERE EXCEPT FOR THE PARADE!!! Eat BEFORE putting on your costume for the parade. (See below for returning the costume)
What to bring: Baton twirlers are dropped off carrying only their baton. Have hair fixed and sunscreen applied BEFORE you arrive, so twirlers don't have to carry anything extra. Parents bring a good attitude because you'll have parking problems. Please figure out your car situation in advance of the parade.
What not to bring: Don't bring any personal belongings. Don't bring a sweater, backpack from school, or lunchbox. No water bottles. DON’T BRING ANYTHING except your baton. If you are doing pom poms or flags, don't even bring your baton.
Chaperones and Sound-System Helpers: Talk to Shanon or Debbie to volunteer. Look professional: wear solid black, top and bottom. No jeans, jackets or coats, even if it's raining. The children aren't wearing coats, so we can't, either.
Potential Problems: **Arriving late! This is the biggest one! **Ill fitting shoes. **Tired, hungry children. **Sunburns. **MESSY HAIR!
**ADULTS: practice fixing your girl's hair several times before parade day!
Returning Costumes:
When you pick up your child at the end, bring a change of clothes. There will be a tent for twirlers to change out of the costume. The tent-process may be slow--a sun dress is easy for girls to slip on, then modestly remove costume underneath without using the tent. Boys can do the same with a Dad's XL t-shirt. You must turn in the costume that afternoon before going home.
School excuses: Remember to send a note to the school requesting early dismissal or absence for the day of the parade.
LOCATIONS:
Drop off: 11:00 MAP
Arrive at Normandale Park (57th & Halsey) at 11:00 in costume, hair fixed, sunscreened. We will be in the Southwest side of the park under the trees with the Kelly Kadets.
PICK UP at 2:15 after the parade: MAP
Be at Grant High School Park to pick up your child. Please do not follow us in the street during the parade, especially the last few blocks. This is irritating to other spectators, distracting to the children, and potentially dangerous. Don’t take your child until the coach excuses him/her and makes personal eye contact with you.
We will meet you in the front of the highschool, (on the east side of the building). There are three doors; we meet the farthest left door (southern door).
Sometimes parents feel sad because they don't get to watch the parade -- they have to race over to pick up their children. Unfortunately, it may be unavoidable, unless you can arrange a carpool agreement with a friend. If we are towards the beginning of the parade, you can pick up your child and still go watch the end of the parade together.
Please don't expect us to babysit. We are usually done at about 2:00. If a parent is not there to pick up a child within 15 minutes of our finish time, the student will be taken to Stites Performing Arts Center (11240 SE Division St. Portland, OR). Then, a $10 charge babysitting charge will need to be paid.
Don't take your child until he/she has been excused by the coach and has returned the costume. Offer to help the coaches in collecting accessories and keeping the kids in order. Keep the focus on getting changed and dismissed: don’t offer water, ice cream, snacks, or juice until they’ve changed their costumes and been excused.
We always have fun! We’ve never lost a child!
