Baton is a fun sport for boys and girls from kindergarten to adult! Twirling improves fine motor and gross motor skills, musicality, and hand-eye coordination. To join the Baton Club, bring the completed registration form to class on any Friday. Enrollment is open to all.
GLENCOE STUDENTS: Go directly to the gym after school at 2:30 to meet with Debbie (coordinator) and Shanon (coach). You will get a name tag and class will begin at 2:35.

BEGINS: October 4, 2024
TIME: 2:35-3:10
FREE.
This is an introductory twirl class recommended for all beginning twirlers. It's so fun! The curriculum is designed for recreational involvement. The students can repeat this class indefinitely. This class is free; however, there are costume rental costs for special performances. Special performances include: Winter Program at Glencoe, two baton events in March and April, and the Junior Rose Parade.
Children may join the class at any point during the year. Please download the registration form (above) for your child to bring to their first class.
No class on the Fridays that Glencoe children do not have school.
YOUR CHILD's SAFETY:
If your child will miss baton on Friday, please text Debbie (503-522-6367) or tell the school secretary. If a twirler who was at school does not show up for class, Debbie will have to call the parents and all family emergency contacts and initiate a search of the school grounds. We take the safety of all twirlers very seriously.
CLOTHES:
Clothes should be snug and stretchy, not baggy so that you don't snag them when you're twirling. Leggings, tight T-shirts, leotards, etc., are all good choices. Not recommended: long dresses, bulky sweaters, sweatshirts, etc.
SHOES:
Sneakers/tennis shoes are a better choice than hard-soled shoes, boots, or sandals. Ballet slippers are also fine.
HAIR & JEWELRY:
Boys and girls should remove all jewelry and watches before class. Hair should be pulled back in a ponytail or out of the eyes; if your twirler likes to wear their hair down, send them with a hairband and someone will help pull it back for class. Shorter hair should be clipped back away from the face. The hair, jewelry, and attire requests are for safety and ease of learning.
BATON:
We have batons that twirlers can borrow for class, but they can't take them home. You might find a toy baton for about $10, or you can buy a "real" baton from the coach for $34 (send cash or a check made out to "Stites"). If you buy a “real” baton someplace else, be sure it’s the correct length.

WINTER PERFORMANCE: a Friday in December
For twirlers who choose to be in the Winter performance, there will be a fee of $16. This covers the costume rentals, the program printing, lightsticks for the lighted batons, and other equipment costs. If your twirler wants to be in the Winter show, but this fee is a problem for your family, talk to Debbie or Shanon for a partial scholarship. We will also have OBC performances in March and April.

JOINING THE KELLY KADETS
Many twirlers who have taken the free baton classes and love baton twirling will decide to join the Kelly Kadet Team. The emphasis for the Kelly Kadet Teams is on baton twirling and dance technique, as well as building team and group awareness, camaraderie, and sportsmanship. The teams twirl in several holiday performances in Portland, at senior centers, in the Junior Rose Parade, and at the three USTA Oregon Baton Council sponsored baton competitions (February-April).
For more information, contact us here or call Debbie, 503-522-6367.
