USTA Rules

I. USTA INDIVIDUAL EVENT RULES

A. Classifications (Proficiency Levels) - Records to be maintained separately FOR EACH EVENT.
1. NOVICE - Novice athletes are those who have never won a competitive first place in a particular event.

1. BEGINNER - A contestant who has won less than five (5) first-place awards. After the 5th first place is won, the contestant may no longer enter the Beginner division in that event.

2. INTERMEDIATE - A contestant who has won less than ten (10) first place awards. After the 10th first-place award is won, the contestant may no longer enter the Intermediate division in that event.

3. ADVANCED - A contestant who has won ten (10) or more first-place awards.

B. Intermediate or Advanced competitors may NEVER compete in a lower classification than they are presently in, but a contestant may enter a higher classification. When the contestant has won the designated number of firsts for that event the contestant must move up. This also applies to beginners.

C. When counting first-place awards to move from Beginners to Intermediate to Advanced, only COMPETITIVE Firsts (at least one other person in competition) have to be counted.

AGE RULES: A twirler competes at the age he/she will be on Dec. 31 of this contest year. This means that if a twirler has not had a birthday yet this year, the twirler enters at the older age, which will happen on the next birthday.

II. State, Regional and National Championship events are divided into "DIVISIONS", rather than levels. Divisions are: Primary (0-8), Juvenile (9-12), Junior (13-16), Senior (17-20) and Collegiate (21+).

III. Exhibition category is for any twirler who would like a new routine evaluated or wants more performance experience, but does not wish to compete in that event at that contest.

IV. Trick Meet: A twirler may enter as many levels of Trick Meet as desired at the same contest. Levels may be repeated even if twirler previously passed that level.

V. Scoring: The Olympic Flash Card System will be used at all Oregon competitions.

VI. Age Divisions:The contest directors reserve the right to combine or divide age divisions as entries warrant.

VII. U.S.T.A. rules, records, judges and score sheets will be used at all contests.

VIII. CAS Events at State: Athletes who enter these events at state must pass compulsories up to the level at which s/he wishes to compete, and pass C and B Movement Technique.

IX. Pre-Trials Check the U.S.T.A. web site for the new requirements for Pre-Trials.

X. Your entry: Bring a record of the events that your contestant has entered to each contest. (photocopy your entry). If there is a question about an entry in the program, this proof of entry is important.

XI. Errors in the program: If you find an entry mistake in any contest program, the appropriate way to have it corrected is to write the mistake on paper and write down how it should be (or have a photocopy of your entry). Take this to the Contest Director and/or announcer, preferably before the contest begins. The entry forms you send in will be available at the contest to double-check.
